Competition in Austin-Bergstrom International Airport continues to heat up. Delta Air Lines, which considers Austin a focus city for its operations, will be defending against American Airlines' latest growth in the Texas capital.

Last week, American Airlines announced a major expansion in Austin which included the addition of its own Austin (AUS) to Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) flights. American Airlines will commence this route on September 8, 2021 with a twice-daily Embraer 175.

Delta first launched its Austin to Cincinnati route in May 2018 with a 6x weekly frequency. This route was later suspended in 2020 due the COVID-19 pandemic. Before this weekend, Delta originally intended to resume the route in March 2022. However, the week after American announced its own AUS-CVG flights, Delta responded by pushing its Austin-Cincinnati resumption forward to September 8, 2021 - the same day American commences the same route.

From September 8, Delta will resume its Austin to Cincinnati route with a daily CRJ-900. From March 1, 2022, Delta will ramp up the route to twice-daily, matching American's scheduled service.

Delta's 76-seat CRJ-900s scheduled on the Austin-Cincinnati route offer 12 First Class seats arranged in a 1-2 configuration along with 20 Comfort+ and 44 Main Cabin seats arranged in a 2-2 configuration.

Similarly, American Eagle's Embraer 175s feature 76 seats consisting of 12 First Class seats arranged in a 1-2 configuration along with 20 Main Cabin Extra and 44 Main Cabin seats arranged in a 2-2 configuration.

As more people gradually begin traveling again, airlines are doubling down on opening new routes to offer customers expanded and more convenient options. Furthermore, airlines are becoming more confident in defending against competitors.

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport has notably seen immense growth with new flights throughout the pandemic. Hawaiian Airlines launched Honolulu to Austin flights, Southwest Airlines added more routes, and American Airlines has significantly expanded its network in Austin with new routes to Reno, Jacksonville, San Juan, Nassau, Cancun, Liberia, Punta Cana, and more.

Delta's latest decision to bring forward the resumption of its Austin-Cincinnati flights further demonstrates the airline's commitment to defending both markets.
