KLM Royal Dutch Airlines hasn't given up on Austin, Texas yet. The SkyTeam carrier has now opened reservations for its new Amsterdam (AMS) to Austin (AUS) route which is set to inaugurate in March 2022.

In September 2019, KLM announced it would commence flights to Austin beginning in May 2020 with its Airbus A330-300s. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, KLM decided to postpone its Amsterdam to Austin route to March 2021 and replace the A330-300 with the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. Although, months later, KLM completely removed its nonstop flights to Austin, placing the new route in question.

Some time this past week, KLM made it clear they still plan to launch flights to the Texas capital. Starting March 28, 2022, KLM will initiate its Amsterdam to Austin route using the Airbus A330-300. The schedule remains the same as before:

  • KL667 - Depart Amsterdam at 12:40 PM arrive in Austin 4:10 PM
  • KL668 - Depart Austin at 6:00 PM arrive in Amsterdam 10:25 AM

Amsterdam to Austin will operate three times a week on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

KLM A330 Business Class

KLM's Airbus A330-300s feature 30 World Business Class, 40 Economy Comfort, and 222 Economy Class seats for a total of 292 seats.

Pre-COVID, KLM's SkyTeam and transatlantic joint venture partner Delta Air Lines named Austin a focus city which continues to maintain this title today. Delta currently offers flights from Austin to most of its hubs along with the Raleigh/Durham focus city.

Despite the pandemic, Austin-Bergstrom International Airport continues to see new carriers and routes. Hawaiian Airlines recently commenced its new service from Honolulu to Austin. American Airlines has added new destinations out of Austin, such as Aspen and Nassau. VivaAerobus just added flights to Austin, which marks its return to AUS after 12 years.

Assuming KLM's Amsterdam to Austin route launches, Austin Airport will have service to three European destinations by the end of March 2022:

  • 1x daily London Heathrow with a British Airways A350-1000
  • 5x weekly Frankfurt with a Lufthansa A330-300
  • 3x weekly Amsterdam with a KLM A330-300

Pre-COVID, Norwegian Air operated flights from London Gatwick to Austin and intended to begin a Paris Charles de Gaulle to Austin route. However, Norwegian has now ceased long-haul operations, which means Austin will not have service to these two European airports for now.

As always, these details are subject to change, especially with the pandemic.

  1. Do you know if British Airways have confirmed restarting their London - Austin route?

  2. Speaking from personal experience, there have been times when I had to delay my travel plans. However, no airline offers so much flexibility to cancel flights as KLM Airlines. KLM airlines cancellation policy and KLM cancellation charges its flexibilities has been my savior.
