VivaAerobus, a rapidly-expanding Mexican low-cost carrier, is continuing to grow its route network in the United States with its fifth destination in Texas.

In 2008, VivaAerobus announced flights to Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) from Monterrey (MTY) and Cancun (CUN). The airline anticipated adding more routes out of Austin, however, this was cut short when VivaAerobus decided to terminate all of its flights to the Texas capital in May 2009.

Today, the carrier has revealed it's ready to return to Austin after 12 years. Starting June 19, VivaAerobus will launch twice-weekly flights from Monterrey to Austin. The following day, VivaAerobus will begin twice-weekly services from Mexico City.

VivaAerobus will not face any competition on the Austin to Monterrey route. However, they will go head-on against Aeromexico on the route to Mexico City.

VivaAerobus' Aggressive Texas Expansion

In the past year, VivaAerobus has aggressively added new routes and destinations in Texas despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

Austin marks the carrier's fifth destination in Texas following Houston (IAH), San Antonio (SAT), Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW), and Harlingen (HRL). Of these five, DFW, HRL, and now AUS were added within the last year.

In 2015, VivaAerobus launched flights to Dallas/Fort Worth but quickly left just months later. In late 2020, they relaunched flights to DFW from both Monterrey and Mexico City with several weekly flights. VivaAerobus has asserted its dedication to growing DFW as they now operate up to 15 weekly flights from Monterrey and 17 weekly flights from Mexico City.

Last month, VivaAerobus announced it would commence flights to Harlingen in South Texas with twice-weekly flights to Monterrey. The new route inaugurated just last week and has already increased to five times per week.

Now VivaAerobus is ready to expand further into Texas by relaunching flights to the capital after 12 years. Austin is a growing market that has received a handful of new routes within the past months.
