Additionally, one of the carrier's newest Hawaiian routes - Long Beach (LGB) to Honolulu (HNL) - is set to increase from daily to twice daily. All of these flights are currently bookable on Southwest Airlines' website. The majority of these are planned to launch in June while some inaugurate in the following months.

Southwest Clashes With Competition

In this latest Hawaiian expansion, Southwest Airlines will introduce its Boeing 737 MAX 8s to Hawaii following ETOPS certification.

Specifically, the new Las Vegas and Phoenix to Honolulu and Maui routes are scheduled to operate with the MAX. The Boeing 737 MAX will allow the Southwest to fly more efficiently to the Hawaiian Islands, which already faces significant competition from other airlines that use next-generation aircraft.

The new Phoenix to Honolulu and Maui routes will see competition from both American Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines. Recently, Hawaiian Airlines announced its own Phoenix to Maui route on the Airbus A321neo.

Over in San Diego, Southwest will face competition from Alaska Airlines on all three new Hawaii routes. Additionally, Hawaiian Airlines also serves to San Diego to Maui route.

In Las Vegas, Hawaiian Airlines currently holds the monopoly on the Honolulu and Maui routes. Southwest will be the second airline to offer these two flights.

Finally, Los Angeles has the most competition with American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, Alaska Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, and Sun Country all operating the LAX-HNL route. The same airlines aside from Sun Country all operate flights from LAX to Maui, Kona, and Lihue.
